In Rockville and throughout Maryland and Washington DC, drivers need to be alert and pay attention to their surroundings. This goes beyond other vehicles and extends to pedestrians, bicyclists and people on scooters and skateboards. Since these individuals are especially vulnerable to serious injuries and death if there is a collision, an accident can cause many problems in their lives. For people who have been hurt or lost a loved one in this type of auto accident, it is imperative to understand what steps to take after it has happened as a legal filing might be necessary to recover sufficient compensation for all that was lost.

Skateboarding teen hit by car suffers severe injuries

An accident in Rockville between a teen skateboarder and a car sent the teen to the hospital with injuries that were said to be life-threatening. According to the investigation, at shortly after 10 p.m., the teen was riding his skateboard and trying to cross the street near the intersection when he was hit by a car. The vehicle was a 2012 Prius driven by a 47-year-old man. When emergency services arrived, they took the boy, 15, to the hospital. The investigation is continuing and it is not known when the driver will be charged.

The aftermath of a car accident can cause substantial challenges

Any auto accident can cause problems for the victim and his or her family, but when it is a young person whose life can be radically altered, it is a major challenge. Among the issues that frequently arise include a hospitalization, surgical procedures, rehabilitation and the need for long-term care. The person might never be able to return to school and be unable to work at a conventional job. The family could be confronted with exorbitant medical expenses, the emotional impact from needing to care from an infirm loved one, and the possibility that the person may need extensive care forever.

A legal filing may help with recovering compensation

While law enforcement and investigators will analyze the accident and determine how and why it happened, it is still imperative that the family be fully protected and their interests take precedence. Evidence must be accrued and the future should be considered financially, personally and mentally. A legal filing might be the main strategy to recover sufficient compensation for all that was lost. Consulting with a firm that has a history of helping people who have been negatively impacted by car accidents is a wise first step.
